IN CONVERSATION WITH NATURE
JSL Gallery is pleased to present In Conversation with Nature, a group exhibition ranging from photography and sculpture, to paintings and weavings. Each work on display has been created by the artist's interaction with and inspiration from time spent in nature. Whether it’s through the literal use of natural materials such as wood and horse hair, to the abstraction of the feeling summoned by spending long periods of time within nature, and even the desire to capture specific moments created by it.
From Alec Franco’s paintings which mimic the minutiae of cellular life, to Annie Shinn’s abstract aerial landscape renderings, the natural world is brought front and center from a wide range of personal yet simultaneously universal perspectives.
Juan Lamarca, Edo Costantini, and Daisy Johnson use photography as their medium in which to explore the natural world. Costantini spent day after day traversing the woods of Bedford, NY with his camera in order to capture specific moments of light and dark. Johnson explores the vulnerability of both the earth’s national parks, and the fragility of humans within it - choosing to photograph her subjects nude within vast and awe inspiring landscapes.
Juan Lamarca’s horse photography explores the juxtaposition of beauty and power, complementary opposites that are the base of nature and every aspect of life - the yin and yang throughout the planet. While his Ocean series takes on a voyeuristic approach, his method is to sit and watch, then transport the viewer as a witness to a moment in time that they were not party to but can recognize.
Through this exhibition we hope to call to attention the intrinsic value that nature plays in our lives as inspiration, sanctuary and source of life. By highlighting nature’s representation through a dialogue of divergent perspectives we hope to remind viewers of its fragility and power.
