Artist Spotlight: Fitzhugh Karol

Fitzhugh Karol at the Tang Museum

We are excited to share that Fitzhugh Karol's work Reads, from his new Recess series, has been installed on campus at Skidmore College in partnership with the Tang Museum. Located outside the Tang Teaching Museum, Recess: Reads invites conversation about the museum’s architecture, employing a vocabulary of forms abstracted from the natural and constructed landscape—hills, valleys, caves, tunnels, steps, and more. Large-scale, outdoor works such as Recess: Reads both imitate and interrupt the landscape, inviting viewers to contemplate how humans impact the world.

Karol also participated in the 28th Alumni Reunion Art Exhibition at the Tang Museum, which ran from June 4th to August 21st. His abstract sculptures of wood and metal evoke elements of real, imagined, and remembered landscapes. Whether monumental or intimate, each sculpture combines a playful vocabulary of geometric forms to draw and strengthen connections between people and the landscape.
